La Dura Dura, the Dawn Wall, free soloing El Cap: these peak performances are like the top of a pyramid.
Stacking a vertical line of bricks doesn’t work. Instead, we stack bricks at the bottom so we can stack a few more on the next layer, and the next layer, until we can’t anymore, and then we go back to the bottom and do it all again.
Continually building the base, brick by brick, so that one day the whole thing might reach one brick higher.
One brick, resting on a mountainous foundation.
Most of us try rushing the process by stacking more bricks on top of the pyramid. The top is exciting. And the view is better.
But if we want the pyramid to last and to reach some great height, the lowest layers will always need the most bricks.
