Skill jumps

When Robert Rodriguez was 18 years old, he used to draw comic strips. Four hours per day.

For a long time he wasn’t very good.

One day, something clicked. Everything jumped forward. His work improved leaps and bounds from the day before.

Not a gradual up, but a flat line followed by a jump.

He experienced the same thing in sculpting, in music, and in film making.

His advice for creators is to keep showing up and put in the hours. Don’t give up, and don’t get frustrated. Keep practicing the skill.

Eventually it jumps.
